Books

A Fine Line: Searching for Balance Among Mountains (Mountaineers Books, 2023) is Graham's debut memoir — an honest account of a life built in the vertical world, and the philosophy that emerged from it. The book traces his evolution from a young climber cutting his teeth in New Zealand's Southern Alps to one of the most accomplished alpinists of his generation, weaving together expedition narrative, grief, partnership, climate, and the ongoing search for balance.

A Fine Line was a finalist for the Banff Mountain Book Competition, the Boardman Tasker Award, and the New Zealand Mountain Book Competition, and received a Bronze Medal at the Independent Publisher Book Awards.

Order from Mountaineers Books

Graham is currently at work on a second book with Mountaineers Books — a comprehensive guide to alpine climbing. It will cover the full spectrum of the craft: the technical components of climbing in mountain environments both near and far, how to build a life in the mountains, how to envision a long-term future as a climber, and how to leverage climbing as a tool for creating change in the world around you. More details to come.

Creative Writing:

Graham writes regularly on his climbing career including multiple feature articles with Alpinist Magazine:

Labyrinths of Rock and Ice

“In the summer of 2019, Graham Zimmerman, Steve Swenson, Mark Richey and Chris Wright left for the Kaberi Glacier in the Karakoram Range of Pakistan to climb Link Sar—a long-dreamed-of 7041-meter peak. For Zimmerman, the expedition was a chance to learn from some of the most experienced Karakoram mountaineers, as well as to challenge some of his own youthful assumptions about alpinism, risk and life.”

Alpinist 53 - Through the Field

“Ever since he started climbing, Graham Zimmerman imagined alpinism as a form of pilgrimage. When he gets a chance to visit the Karakoram Range with Steve Swenson, Scott Bennett and Hajji Ghulam Rasool, he realizes the goal might be different than he'd thought.”

Alpinist 49 - On Belay

“Growing up, the Kiwi-American alpinist Graham Zimmerman daydreamed over bygone blanks on maps. No wonder he found himself drawn to unclimbed routes above the rarely visited Lacuna Glacier, the very name of which means gap."
